This was a commission for an incredible, lovely lady. Born in the
house she still lived in at 82. The Victorian house was one of those
built by her uncle when he constructed the whole street in Oxford.
In the 1960's she had removed many of the original fireplaces
and in the 1990's she decided to replace the front room open fire.
My commission was to paint the slate fireplace to look like marble,
specifically in a green marble with pink marble panels to match
the decoration of the house, every room being wallpapered with variations
of pink roses and foliage. The other consideration to be taken into
account for the marble effect was that the client was registered
blind and so the marble veins and markings needed to be very easy
to see with limited sight.
